The community of Santiago Suchilquitongo or "Suchil" is a semi-urban town located in Southern Mexico about an hour outside of Oaxaca City. The local population is approximately 12,000 consisting of smaller fragmented communities of Zapotec and Mixtec descent. Suchil is located in an area called the Etla District, which is known for its cantera stone carvings, cheese production, and fertile countryside. Agriculture is the dominant source of economic opportunities in Suchil though nearby towns are known for artisanal products like glass work, baskets, and pottery.
The Santiago Suchilquitongo or "Suchil" community struggles with job creation for younger generations and the high costs of current infrastructure, which our nonprofit partner Tejiendo Alianzas strives to facilitate. Current chronic health issues in the community include diabetes, hypertension, and malnutrition.
